AI for Healthcare: Vendors, Use Cases, and Sources (September 2026)
Healthcare AI is a tale of two speeds. Clinical documentation (ambient scribe) is approaching maturity with public pricing and documented outcomes. Diagnostic AI (radiology, pathology) is emerging but under active FDA regulatory development. The regulatory environment for autonomous clinical AI decisions is the highest-risk of any vertical; human-in-the-loop is required by clinical and regulatory standards, not just by caution.
EMERGING: Actively deploying. Some vendors mature; broader category still scaling.
Use Cases in Healthcare
Ambient Clinical Documentation (AI Scribe)
AI listens to patient-physician conversations and generates clinical notes in the physician's SOAP format. Abridge, Microsoft Dragon Copilot (formerly Nuance DAX), and Suki AI are the leading platforms. Vendors and health systems have reported large documentation-time savings, but the largest controlled study (JAMA, April 2026; ~1,800 AI-scribe adopters across five health systems) found more modest gains of roughly 16 minutes of documentation time and 13 fewer minutes in the EHR per eight patient-hours, with heavier users saving more.
Prior Authorisation Automation
AI assists with prior auth documentation, reducing the administrative burden on clinical staff and reducing denial rates. Notable Health is the leading platform. The AMA estimates 35% of prior auths are still entirely manual; AI automation is reducing this but not eliminating it.
Radiology AI Assist
AI analyses imaging studies (chest X-ray, CT, MRI) to flag findings for radiologist review. Aidoc and Tempus have FDA clearances in specific indications. Aidoc is embedded in the radiology workflow as a second-read tool; radiologists retain final authority.
Medical Billing and Coding
AI reads clinical notes and assigns ICD-10 codes, reducing coding errors and denial rates. Ambience Healthcare and similar platforms integrate into the EHR workflow. The ROI is clear: coding errors cost health systems 3-5% of revenue in denials and write-offs.
Vendor Landscape
Vendors are named and linked to product pages. We do not rank vendors or recommend a single winner. Vendor pricing and product details change; verify on vendor sites before procurement.

Maturity Verdict
Ambient scribe AI (Abridge, Microsoft Dragon Copilot, Suki) is approaching mature and actively deployed at health systems. Diagnostic AI (Aidoc, PathAI, Tempus) is emerging with FDA clearances in specific indications. Autonomous clinical decisions are not permissible; regulatory constraints make healthcare an emerging rather than mature vertical overall.
